Diversify Your Professional Portfolio

It seems like the stock market sends you flowers one week but breaks your heart the next. I don’t know a whole lot about how the markets work but I do understand the benefits of having a diversified investment portfolio. It’s an offensive strategy that aims to reduce risk by investing in different types of assets.

Each one of you excel at specific things. You went to school for a specific area of study, earned certifications that would help you advance within a particular field, or your professional portfolio reflects a notable amount of work experience in specific functions or capacities.

It’s important to specialize in something; to be anchored and proficient in distinct areas.

Your portfolio of skills, experience, insight, and knowledge should also reflect a degree of diversification.

I’m not saying that a software engineer’s professional background should include experience in HR.

What I’m saying is that while the main value-add of a software engineer to a company might be centered around software development and programming language expertise (as an example), a software engineer who in addition to their developer acumen can help win customers by effectively articulating the value and dynamics of a product - is pretty appealing.

Being skilled in areas that are adjacent to your primary areas of expertise will help you achieve differentiation in today’s highly competitive professional landscape. Continue to hold true to your anchor investments but remember to add complimentary skills and experience to your portfolio as well.
